Rangefinders: distance without false precision

A rangefinder measures a line-of-sight distance to what it captures. Slope features and other aids may be restricted by the Rules or a competition's local rule.

Before choosing

  1. Check unit settings.
  2. Confirm which target was measured.
  3. Read how to disable slope or restricted features.
  4. Compare the result with a course marker when uncertain.

Practical test

Measure a visible fixed target several times. On the course, combine the flag distance with front, back and hazard information before choosing a shot.

Common mistakes

Do not assume a precise reading is the correct target. A background tree can be farther away than the flag you intended to measure.

Example

Knowing the flag is 150 yards away does not answer whether your normal carry clears the front bunker.

Check the manufacturer’s current instructions and specifications for the exact product. This is an educational selection guide, not a hands-on product review.
