Useful statistics describe repeated situations and decisions. A few round totals are a starting point, not a complete explanation of skill.

Work through it

  1. Record score, penalties and optional putting or green statistics.
  2. Keep nine- and eighteen-hole averages separate.
  3. Count fairways available rather than including par 3s.
  4. Review notes alongside the numbers.

A practical example

More greens hit may produce more long first putts and a higher total putt count despite better scoring opportunities.

Practice task

After three comparable rounds, choose one repeated issue and set a measurable practice task. Compare the next few rounds under similar conditions.

Common mistakes

Do not invent strokes-gained values without a suitable benchmark and shot-level data. Total putts alone can be misleading when approach distances change.
