Course management: make a playable plan

Course management combines your shot pattern with the hole's design and the situation after each stroke. Strategy is useful only when it can adapt to the actual lie.

Work through it

  1. Work backward from a sensible approach target.
  2. Choose a tee-shot landing area that suits your carry.
  3. Reassess after the first shot rather than forcing the original plan.
  4. Keep penalty risk and recovery difficulty in view.
Plan the next landing area using your carry and the space available.
Plan the next landing area using your carry and the space available.

A practical example

After a poor drive into rough, the original plan to reach a par 5 in two may no longer be sensible. A safe advance can reset the hole.

Practice task

Plan three holes on a scorecard before playing. After each, note where the plan changed and whether the new choice was realistic.

Common mistakes

Do not commit to a club before inspecting the lie. Do not chase a lost stroke with a second low-percentage attempt.
