Understanding golf: strokes, holes and a round

Golf asks you to play a ball from the teeing area into the hole, counting strokes and any applicable penalties. A lower total wins ordinary stroke play; match play compares holes won instead.

Work through it

  1. Start by identifying the teeing area, fairway and putting green.
  2. Count every intended stroke, including a swing that misses the ball. Practice swings are different.
  3. Learn the format before starting. Casual practice, stroke play and match play use different scoring arrangements.
  4. Use a short course or supervised beginner session before a full-length course.

A practical example

On a par 4, five strokes with no penalties is a bogey. Four strokes plus one penalty is also five. Par describes the hole's benchmark, not how many attempts you are allowed.

Practice task

Play three short practice holes and record strokes after each hole. Keep a separate note of penalties so they are included once in the total. Your first target is a complete, honest scorecard, not a particular score.

Common mistakes

Do not compare a nine-hole score directly with an eighteen-hole score. A picked-up ball is not automatically a completed stroke-play score; agree how a practice round will be recorded.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
