MY GOLF BLUEPRINT

Essential rules for your first rounds

Learn the rules situations you will meet most often: a lost ball, a penalty area, a provisional ball, a drop and a ball on the green. Check the competition's format and local rules too.

Work through it

  1. Identify your ball before starting.
  2. Know the three-minute search limit and when a provisional is permitted.
  3. Distinguish red or yellow penalty areas from out of bounds.
  4. Before lifting, work out whether the ball must be marked and replaced or dropped under a rule.
  5. Ask for a ruling when unsure instead of agreeing to ignore a penalty.

A practical example

If a tee shot may be lost outside a penalty area, announcing a provisional before playing it can avoid walking back later.

Practice task

Read the rules hub and work through its lost-ball, penalty-area and dropping examples. Put the official rules app or website within reach before your next round.

Common mistakes

Do not treat all lost balls as one-stroke lateral drops. The optional alternative-to-stroke-and-distance local rule applies only when adopted. Match-play procedures also differ from stroke play.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
