Swing path: read it with the face

Club path is the horizontal direction of clubhead travel around impact. Its effect depends on the face, loft and strike location, so an inside path does not guarantee a draw.

Work through it

  1. Record start direction, curve and contact.
  2. Use alignment references safely outside the club's travel.
  3. Keep the intended target fixed while comparing shots.
  4. Use a launch monitor when you need measured degrees.

A practical example

A right-handed player can swing in-to-out and still curve right if the face is sufficiently open to that path.

Practice task

Hit five shots with an intended gentle fade and five with an intended gentle draw at moderate speed. Record whether the start line and curve change together.

Common mistakes

Do not swing wildly to the right to cure every slice. The face may remain even farther right of the path, or impact may be on the heel.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
