Driver spin: diagnose before reducing it
Spin affects driver flight, but “less” is not automatically better. Very low spin can make carry and control less reliable for some players.
Work through it
- Check strike height and location.
- Compare spin with ball speed, launch and carry.
- Use the same ball and measurement conditions.
- Test setup and equipment changes separately.
A practical example
A low-face strike can produce a different spin pattern from a centered one. A new head setting does not replace strike feedback.
Practice task
Collect ten normal drives, marking the strike. Compare centered shots with high and low face strikes. Ask a fitter to explain any large differences before buying a new shaft.
Common mistakes
Do not assume a shaft label is the cause of excess spin. Delivered loft, attack angle, strike and ball design also matter.
Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
