Hybrids: choose the lie, then the shot

A hybrid can offer a useful launch option between woods and irons. It still needs a clean enough path to the ball and a target that fits its flight.

Work through it

  1. Check how deeply the ball sits in the grass.
  2. Use a normal balanced setup and avoid trying to scoop.
  3. Measure carry from a good lie first.
  4. Test rough and uneven lies only in safe practice conditions.

A practical example

If a hybrid and long iron carry the same distance but one lands much steeper, course conditions may determine which is useful.

Practice task

Hit a five-shot group with a hybrid and the neighboring iron. Compare average carry, height and landing behavior. Keep both only if their roles are distinct.

Common mistakes

Do not assume a hybrid escapes every bad lie. Thick grass can change contact, face delivery and control.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
