Wedge distance control: build a carry matrix
A wedge matrix records the carry produced by repeatable swing lengths with your own clubs. It is more useful than estimating distance from loft alone.
Work through it
- Choose two or three comfortable swing lengths you can recognize.
- Measure carry with one ball model.
- Keep wind and lie as consistent as possible.
- Record a group average and spread for each combination.
A practical example
A shorter swing with a lower-lofted wedge may cover the same carry as a fuller swing with a higher-lofted wedge, but their landing behavior can differ.
Practice task
Hit five shots per swing length with two wedges. Enter the carry values in the gapping tool and print your reference card. Retest on another day.
Common mistakes
Do not label a single perfect strike as your stock distance. Do not confuse range targets or total rollout with measured carry.
Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
