Skyed driver shots: checks and practice

A skyed drive strikes very high on the face or near the crown and launches unusually high. Tee height and delivery both need checking.

Possible causes

  • Very high strike location
  • Tee height unsuitable for the delivery
  • A steep approach into the teed ball

Simple checks

  1. Inspect the face and crown carefully.
  2. Use a moderate tee height and comfortable speed.
  3. Compare where the ball sits relative to the face at address.

A practice drill

Hit five controlled drives with one tee height. Mark contact. Make a small tee-height change and repeat, retaining the setup otherwise.

Avoid this trap

Do not lower the tee dramatically and ignore the swing delivery. Avoid practicing where a high pop-up could reach a roof or adjacent bay.

The checks narrow the possibilities; they do not confirm a diagnosis. Keep a record of several shots and ask a qualified coach to connect the pattern to your swing.
