Inconsistent contact: checks and practice

A scattered impact pattern can reflect several interacting variables. First establish what varies: heel-to-toe contact, strike height, turf contact or all three.

Possible causes

  • Changing setup
  • Variable balance or swing length
  • Unsuitable equipment or fatigue

Simple checks

  1. Choose one club and one target.
  2. Mark face contact and note the ground strike.
  3. Keep the practice block short enough to maintain attention.

A practice drill

Hit ten half-swings and ten normal swings. Compare impact spread. Use the simpler task as a base if the full motion loses consistency.

Avoid this trap

Do not change technique after every ball. Do not remove all poor shots from your distance records and then expect that average on the course.

The checks narrow the possibilities; they do not confirm a diagnosis. Keep a record of several shots and ask a qualified coach to connect the pattern to your swing.
