Early extension: connect movement with impact: checks and practice

Early extension describes the pelvis moving toward the ball during the downswing. Video can show the motion, but its relevance depends on the player's strike and comfort.

Possible causes

  • Setup that leaves little room
  • Balance or sequencing changes
  • A compensation for another delivery issue

Simple checks

  1. Use a consistent down-the-line camera angle outside the hitting area.
  2. Compare a short swing with the full swing.
  3. Review contact and balance with the video.

A practice drill

Rehearse small swings with room for the arms and a comfortable hip turn. Use a coach to select a constraint rather than forcing the hips back.

Avoid this trap

Do not pin the pelvis against an object or force spinal positions through pain. A video label is not a complete diagnosis.

The checks narrow the possibilities; they do not confirm a diagnosis. Keep a record of several shots and ask a qualified coach to connect the pattern to your swing.
