Excessive driver spin: checks and practice

Spin is only excessive relative to the player's speed, launch, strike and intended flight. High flight by itself does not prove excessive spin.

Possible causes

  • Low-face impact
  • Large delivered spin loft
  • Ball or head setup unsuited to the delivery

Simple checks

  1. Measure spin instead of estimating from height alone.
  2. Mark the impact location.
  3. Compare centered shots under consistent conditions.

A practice drill

Test five to ten drives with the same ball. Review the relationship between strike, carry and spin. Ask a fitter to identify which change is worth testing.

Avoid this trap

Do not chase the lowest spin number. Low-spin misses can lose carry or become harder to control.

The checks narrow the possibilities; they do not confirm a diagnosis. Keep a record of several shots and ask a qualified coach to connect the pattern to your swing.
