Driver launch: match flight to your delivery

Driver launch is best judged with carry, strike and spin together. The ideal window varies with speed, ball, delivery and conditions.

Work through it

  1. Confirm tee height and impact position.
  2. Measure a representative group using your playing ball where possible.
  3. Compare carry and dispersion rather than total roll alone.
  4. Test loft settings with a fitter, outside a round.

A practical example

A loft increase can help one delivery while producing excessive height for another; the measured result settles the comparison.

Practice task

Record five shots per setting while keeping the other equipment constant. Keep ordinary misses in the comparison. Choose a useful pattern, not the single longest ball.

Common mistakes

Avoid universal launch-angle targets. More launch is not always better, and a higher face strike may also change spin.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
