Fairway woods from a tee and the turf

A fairway wood needs a suitable lie and a strike that catches the ball cleanly. Trying to lift it from tight turf often disrupts contact.

Work through it

  1. Begin from a low tee with a comfortable swing.
  2. Move to a good grass lie after contact is repeatable.
  3. Keep the ball position consistent enough to compare outcomes.
  4. Choose a more lofted club when the lie makes the longer wood unreliable.

A practical example

A 5-wood that launches reliably can be a better long approach option than a 3-wood that rarely carries its intended distance.

Practice task

Hit five from a low tee and five from a good lie. Record carry and strike quality. Use the result to decide which course situations suit the club.

Common mistakes

Do not attempt a long fairway wood from deep rough merely because the distance is long. Do not expect a sweeping motion to mean hitting upward from the ground.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
