Playing golf in wind

Wind changes the air the ball moves through and can alter carry, height and curve. Headwind effects are not a fixed percentage of distance.

Work through it

  1. Judge direction using reliable course observations.
  2. Choose a wider target and allow for uncertainty.
  3. Use a comfortable controlled swing rather than forcing speed.
  4. Check the lie and landing conditions before selecting a lower flight.

A practical example

Into a headwind, a higher-spinning flight may climb and lose carry. The practical choice depends on your measured delivery and available target.

Practice task

On a safe windy practice day, compare ordinary shots with a shorter controlled motion. Record carry ranges. Build a conservative club-choice note from your own results.

Common mistakes

Do not claim a headwind directly adds backspin after impact. It increases relative airspeed and changes aerodynamic forces; launch spin is set at impact.

Choose a comfortable movement and change one variable at a time. Stop if a movement causes pain; a qualified coach can adapt the task to your mobility and experience.
