Uphill and downhill lies: adapt the task

Sloping ground changes balance and delivery. Use a stable stance and a realistic target before trying to restore a level-lie swing.

Work through it

  1. Assess whether the stance is safe.
  2. Fit posture to the slope within a comfortable range.
  3. Use a shorter motion if balance is uncertain.
  4. Allow for a changed flight and carry window.

A practical example

An uphill lie can add effective loft for a typical delivery, but the resulting carry still depends on contact and speed.

Practice task

Practice one gentle slope at a time under safe conditions. Compare contact and launch with a level lie using short shots.

Common mistakes

Do not apply a fixed “one club per slope” rule. The slope, club and delivery interact, and unstable ground can make the shot inappropriate.
