Rule 12.2 · Official source checked 6 November 2026

Bunkers have specific restrictions before a stroke. You must not test the sand or touch it with a club in prohibited ways, including a practice swing or the backswing for the stroke.

On the course

  1. Identify whether the ball is in the bunker.
  2. Remove loose impediments or movable obstructions only under the applicable rules.
  3. Avoid grounding the club immediately in front of or behind the ball.
  4. After playing, care for the bunker without improving conditions for a remaining stroke.

Worked situation

Digging your feet in for a stance is generally allowed. Testing the sand with a club to learn its condition is different.

Important distinction

Do not apply the old idea that every touch of sand is prohibited. Equally, do not treat permitted course care as permission to improve your next shot.
