Equipment rules: conforming clubs and balls

A club or ball being sold does not by itself establish that it is permitted in every competition. Rule 4 governs equipment use, and additional Model Local Rules may apply to particular events.

Before the round

  • Check the competition’s terms and local rules, including any required lists of conforming equipment.
  • Use clubs and balls that meet the applicable equipment requirements. Ask the committee if a specific model is uncertain.
  • Do not deliberately change a club’s playing characteristics during a round and then make a stroke with it.
  • A rangefinder can normally measure distance under Rule 4.3, but using prohibited slope or other assistance is different. Check any local ban on distance-measuring devices.

A practical example

A device offering both distance and elevation adjustment is not automatically permission to use its slope function during a round. Disable prohibited assistance and follow the competition’s instructions.

Official rule, checked 6 November 2026: Rule 4. Competition equipment requirements can be stricter than a casual practice arrangement.
