Rule 3.2 · Official source checked 6 November 2026

Match play compares the result of each hole. A player or side wins a hole by taking fewer strokes, including penalties, or through the applicable match-play rules.

On the course

  1. Confirm the match format and any handicap strokes.
  2. Keep the match status after each hole.
  3. Understand concessions and the order of play before starting.

Worked situation

Winning one hole by three strokes still wins one hole. A concession must be clear; once validly made, it cannot be declined or withdrawn.

Important distinction

Playing out of turn can allow an opponent to cancel a stroke. Do not assume stroke-play procedures automatically apply.
