Rule 13.1 · Official source checked 6 November 2026

The putting green has special permissions for marking, lifting, cleaning and repairing damage. Determine whether the ball is on the green before applying those permissions.

On the course

  1. Mark the spot before lifting a ball that must be replaced.
  2. Clean it when allowed and replace it on the original spot.
  3. Repair permitted damage without improving more than the rule allows.
  4. Take required relief from a wrong green when applicable.

Worked situation

A ball mark or shoe damage can generally be repaired on the green. Natural imperfections and normal maintenance conditions are not all treated as repairable damage.

Important distinction

Do not move the marker to improve the line without correctly replacing it later. Accidental movement and movement by natural forces have distinct procedures.
