Rule 6.4 and 5.6 · Official source checked 6 November 2026

Safe, responsible Ready Golf is encouraged in stroke play. Match play gives order of play a different role, so agree any particular out-of-turn stroke only within the rules.

On the course

  1. Be ready while others play when safe.
  2. Check that your shot will not distract or endanger someone.
  3. Understand who has the honor in your format.
  4. Move promptly after the shot.

Worked situation

In stroke play, a ready player may play out of turn to save time when safe. In match play, an opponent may have the right to cancel an out-of-turn stroke.

Important distinction

Do not confuse pace with rushing or playing toward a group within range. An agreement to play out of turn to give an advantage is not ordinary Ready Golf.
