Etiquette and practical course care. Follow local guidance.

A repaired pitch mark helps the green recover and gives later players a fairer surface. Use the course's preferred method and tool.

Practical steps

  1. Insert the repair tool around the outer edge of the mark.
  2. Gently work surrounding turf toward the center.
  3. Avoid levering the center upward.
  4. Finish by smoothing lightly with the putter when appropriate.

Example

Ask a member of the greenkeeping staff to demonstrate the method. Repair your own mark and another when practical without delaying play.

Avoid this

Do not aggressively lift soil from beneath the mark. Repairing damage is different from changing a natural imperfection on your putting line.
